WASHINGTON – DOD Watch issued the following statement in response to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s review of tuition assistance at radical universities:

“DOD Watch supports Secretary Hegseth’s decision to review and, where necessary, withdraw Department of War tuition assistance from colleges and universities that demonstrate hostility toward the United States military and the values it defends.

“For years, the Department has sent some of our most promising officers to institutions such as Harvard University and other elite campuses under the assumption that these partnerships would strengthen the fabric of the Armed Forces. Instead, some universities have fostered environments openly contemptuous of the armed forces, traditional American values, and the constitutional order our service members swear to protect.

“Taxpayer dollars should not subsidize institutions that demean the military, tolerate ideological indoctrination, or promote narratives that undermine military cohesion and national unity. Tuition assistance is a privilege, not an entitlement. Under the leadership of President Donald Trump and Secretary Hegseth, the Department of War has made clear that merit, readiness, and warfighting excellence, not ideological conformity, will define the future of military education. Reviewing academic partnerships is a logical extension of that commitment.

“Our officers deserve academic environments that respect their service, challenge them constructively, and prepare them to win wars, not lecture them on why their country is flawed beyond redemption. The military must never seek the emulation of the standards that accord with liberal society, because a necessarily hierarchical military must function by a different framework. Secretary Hegseth’s action sends a clear message: the mission comes first.”
