DOD Watch Urges Swift Action on Navy Memo to Restore Merit and Discipline at Naval Academy

WASHINGTON – DOD Watch, an organization dedicated to calling out radical policies within the Department of Defense, issued the following statement after reports emerged of a draft memo from the Secretary of the Navy proposing the elimination of DEI initiatives at the U.S. Naval Academy and the restoration of a warrior ethos through a new educational review board: 

“DOD Watch strongly commends Secretary of the Navy John Phelan for taking bold and necessary steps to restore discipline, meritocracy, and a true warrior ethos at the U.S. Naval Academy. The reported draft memo proposing an educational review board is a vital step toward eliminating divisive DEI initiatives and returning the Academy to its core mission: preparing future Naval and Marine Corps officers to lead with strength, unity, and excellence.

“For too long, radical ideologies and identity politics have undermined military readiness and diluted the purpose of our armed forces. The Naval Academy is not a social experiment. It is a premier warfighting institution tasked with developing the next generation of warriors. By reportedly proposing a board of experienced leaders committed to combat effectiveness and national security, Secretary Phelan is signaling a decisive course correction rooted in traditional military values.

“While the memo has not yet been finalized, we urge the Navy to move swiftly and decisively to implement its recommendations. The future of our Navy and Marine Corps depends on institutions like the Naval Academy prioritizing warfighting over woke ideology. Restoring focus on mission, discipline, and merit will strengthen our national defense and ensure our servicemembers are led by the most capable and principled officers.”
